How it works
Same profit either way
Hedge stake = original stake × original decimal odds ÷ hedge decimal odds. $100 at +600 (7.00) hedged at -150 (1.667) needs $420: if your bet wins you get $700 back, minus the $420 hedge, and if the hedge wins it pays $700, minus your original $100. Either way, $180 profit.
Get your stake back
Hedge stake = original stake ÷ (hedge decimal odds − 1). Here that's $150: if the hedge wins it makes the $100 back, and if your bet wins you keep $600 − $150 = $450 profit. Any hedge stake in between is a mix of the two.
Two outcomes only
These sums assume exactly one of the two bets wins, like the two sides of a moneyline. If there's a third result (a tie, a push on the spread), a hedge can lose both ways, so check the market before you hedge.
Is hedging worth it?
Hedging swaps some upside for certainty, and you pay the vig on the hedge bet too. Shop for the best price on the hedge side: on a big hedge, a few cents on the odds is real money.
